An ecological footprint (EF) is the measure of consumption of resources. It is calculated in terms of the total land area required per person to meet their food, energy, raw material, water and wastewater disposal needs. The larger the footprint, the larger the impact. We will determine

  • What is the footprint of the Fuchs Foundation Antarctic Expedition?
  • What implications does this have for the Antarctic and global environment?
  • How can the footprint of expeditions be reduced?
  • How can we encourage others to reduce their personal and professional footprints?

To do this we will quantify and document the energy and materials consumed by the FFAE and where possible map these flows. Data will be collected for transport, energy, materials, waste and water consumption. On expedition, energy and resource flows will be monitored and recorded. With the help of Best Foot Forward we will quantify the footprint. We will use the results to encourage expeditions, schools and businesses to reduce their ecological footprint.
