glacier1.jpgWelcome Geographers. Keep your eyes peeled here for more information about your Antarctic projects. If you want to contact me in Antarctica you can just leave a message on the ‘Pupil Page’ or in the ‘Got a Question’ section. Just put your first name or initials in and you don’t need an email address. Hopefully this will help you find out everything you ever wanted to know about Antarctica and what it’s really like. Good luck with those projects!

Miss Daniels has set a special challenge for you. Because Antarctica is specially protected we need to carry out all the waste that we make in the four weeks that we are there. And I mean ALL the waste. Food wrappers, fuel, food scraps, broken equipment, human waste…. We can’t leave behind a single trace that we were there. Your challenge is to decide how many wheelie bins this waste would fill. Six people, four weeks, camping in Antarctica. Write your best guess for the number of wheelie bins we would fill in the box below. Write your first name and the first initial of your surname. There will be a great prize for the winner!

Some good guesses here! Frances, don’t be too rude about Jake! Jake, I’m going to be flying into Patriot Hills. It’s about 80 degrees south- about 700 miles from the South Pole. There are about 4000 scientists there in the summer and about 1000 in the summer time (I think!). Nobody lives there permanently. It’s too cold.

  10.   dr rogers Says:

Hi James! It depends how cold it is and what we are doing as to what I wear. At night I just tend to wear one layer, my thermals plus a hat and neck gaiter. I also wear my down booties. During the day if we are pulling a sledge I wear 3 layers. Thermals, fleece and windsuit. If I get really cold I slap on my down jacket and down salopettes. They are lovely and warm. We’ve been down to -60 degrees C and been ok!

Thanks Will! I’m hoping I will be back soon too. It’s getting pretty cold over here. I don’t know how these lichens manage to survive.

  18.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Jemma, Good guess! It is very cold here. Our average temperature is about -15 degrees C. Although sometimes it gets much colder. It has been down to -60 degrees with windchill added in. Brrr…

  25.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Lydia. Where we are the human activity is very limited. At the moment we are 7 days hike from the nearest people. At the basecamp we started at they do everything they can to limit their effect on the environment. For example they fly out all the rubbish and human waste (although flying isn’t that environmentally friendly). I think that this question is very difficult. I think people have a right to visit Antarctica as it is so amazing. Perhaps tourism will help to keep it safe from people trying to mine resources. However, I think they need to be careful to manage the tourism as well as possible to limit the impact. Antarctica is such a special place I personally think we need to do all we can to protect it and to keep it as pristine as possible.

  26.   dr rogers Says:

HI Asha. Great to hear from you! Good guess too. I don’t want to give too much away though! The night isn’t too different from the day as we get 24 hour sunlight. If you leave the tent at 2am, to go to the toilet for example, it looks like it could be the middle of the day. Our tent has gone down to -13 degrees at night. But usually it is about -1 in our tent at night.

  27.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Shafaye. Another good guess. I wonder who will be closest to the truth! We are eating lots of chocolate (3 bars a day. We are also eating cereal (about half a bag of Alpen every morning), cereal bars, peanuts, haribo, cup-a-soups, and for dinner a meal that you just need to add hot water too. I’m getting a little fed up of the diet to be honest. There is only so much chocolate you can take!

  28.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Hannah. These guesses are quite close together! I might have to start looking at half bins…. No penguins except in Chile. We are too far from the coast here.

  29.   dr rogers Says:

HI Hannah. Good guess on the wheelie bins. I took a look at our rubbish sledge the other day and our poo sledge. I’m going to give everyone a little hint. There may not be as much as you are expecting! I am having fun but it is very hard sometimes. No penguins yet, except in Chile, as we are too far from the coast. Lots of lichens though. Which is good for me because that is what I am looking for out here!

  30.   ellen w Says:

    i think it’ll be about 10 bins
    have fun sufering dr rogers!!!

  34.   E.G.S.T Says:

    Hope your having fun Miss

    I think about 8

  35.   dr rogers Says:

That’s closer than some guesses I’ve seen! I’m suffering plenty thanks Ellen.

  36.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Courtney. Hmmm.. I’ll have to let your Geography teachers decide whether you can have two guesses. Well done on finishing your project! Looking forward to seeing you all in January.

  37.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Beth. It is very cold but I think I am getting more used to it now. It is about 1 degree in the tent at the moment and I don’t have my gloves or hat on and I feel quite warm.

  38.   kara Says:

    heyya miss,

i think about 45 wheelie bins, and what is the climate like there cant wait to see you

  39.   dr rogers Says:

Thanks E.G.S.T! I am having fun but it is getting a bit difficult now as we are stuck here waiting for a plane to be able to get in.

  40.   dr rogers Says:

Hi Kara. Really good to hear from you. The climate varies massively between the polar region (which is a cold desert) and the coastal areas (that are warmer and wetter). Where we are the temperatures have been about -15 degrees during the day. It’s felt a lot colder though because of the wind. We’ve had quite a lot of snow – about 35cm in the last few days. See you soon.

  41.   Aria Says:

    Hey miss :D

I think around 48 wheelie bins?
    Just a random guess

Hope your having a great time :)
