I hope that you are enjoying looking at my Antarctic blog. Don’t forget to log on when I am in Antarctica so you can send me messages, questions and ideas. If I’m slow getting back to you try emailing dannyboy@bullexpeditions.com. To leave a message on this site just write in the comment boxes at the bottom of the page you want to see your comment on. Just leave your first name and an initial if you want to. You don’t need to leave an email address. I hope that I will be able to get back to you pretty quickly. Keep your eyes peeled for competitions too!
Some pupils worked very hard to get me to Antarctica.
I’d like to say a big thank you to pupils at Higham Lane School for holding a non-uniform day to support me.
Also, Higham Apprent-ICE teams managed to raise about £700 towards the expedition with loads of creative events. A special well done to competition winners ‘The Iced Gems’, pictured here in the local radio studio, for raising a whooping £290 between them.
A big thank you to Charlotte Smith, who managed to raise over £50 with a sponsored silence. What a star!
Year 11 kindly donated £130 towards the expedition at the Leavers Dance and Assembly. Thank you Year 11 and good luck.
Altogether, Higham Lane has raised £2100 to help me to get to Antarctica. Thank you Higham! I couldn’t have done it without you.

November 2nd, 2007 at 12:08 am
Joanna, Chloe- Great to hear from you. I will look out for penguins for you. We aren’t very likely to see them as we will be too far inland. But we might fly over some. If we do I will say hello from you! I’m glad 8H2 are behaving well. Keep your eye on them-I want to hear about any detentions! I missed assembly too so don’t be too harsh on your new teacher! I miss you all and I’m looking forward to coming home.
November 4th, 2007 at 7:05 pm
Hi Dr Rogers!
Hope you’re okay - good luck in Antarctica! In Geography we are doing a project on Antarctica so to make sure I do a good one, I could ask you questions now and again if that’s ok.
8H2’s Supply Teacher thinks that I’m the only Form Captain because Jake has lost his badge (I think in the washing-machine)and it seems like I am the actual Form Tutor because he asks me to read out the notices (Chloe does it though!) and sometimes I have to help him do the register heehee! We all miss you and I hope you have a great time! I’ll keep in touch.
Take care
November 5th, 2007 at 10:30 am
Great to hear from you Frances! Tell Jake not to be so lazy! He needs to find his badge too. I’m glad that you are taking your form captain duties seriously.I hope that you are looking after the others and that George’s arm is ok!

Hi Miss!
Me and Emma are in a talent competition! We are going to sing a Avril Lavigne song. Hope you are OK.
Guess what? I’m in the newspaper because my and my two friends did that Youth Speech at the Town Hall in front of the Rotary Club. It was scary but we did it! The other Higham Lane team won though but we are going to join again next year. The cup of tea was revolting!
Good Luck tomorrow..

November 25th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Hi Laura. We saw penguins in Chile but we are too far away from the coast to see them where we are. I will keep looking out though! I’m a little bit glad that you are having some cold too. It makes me feel a little bit better! I wonder if you did get a snow day. I think most days would be a snow day here. We have had about 4 days already when we couldn’t get out of the tents because it was too windy and cold.
November 25th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Hi Lauren. Great to hear from you! Thanks for the message. Hope school is going ok!
November 25th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Pierre, I can feel my toes at the moment as I am in the tent. Sometimes when we are out I can’t feel them as they get very cold!
November 27th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
Hi Miss!
I was at the front and the lead singer waved at me! But I didn’t get home till past midnight though and I was standing next to the speakers so at school the next day, I was temporarily deaf and tired!!
Hope you’re okay - it seems like you’re having fun! Last Sunday (25th) I went to see The HIVES! If you havn’t heard of them, they are one of the greatest rock bands
Anyway - enjoy yourself and find more lichens!

Sounds great Frances. Can’t believe that you got waved at! Good to hear that you are into Swedish rock bands! I like their song Hate to Say I Told You So! I haven’t got it with me though. Hope that you are keeping Jake in line.
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Hi Daniel. I’m having a great time, although it is a lot of hard work and quite stressful at times! I have only seen penguins in Chile on our way here because we are too far from the coast here to see them.
December 3rd, 2007 at 5:41 pm
Hey miss,
Its saffiya from your form!
I’m doing the Antarctica project at the moment and there’s some questions I would like to ask you, if that’s ok.. Do you know what kind of research scientists are carrying out in Antarctica? Also, what do you think about the future of Antarctica?
Hope your having a good time
Saffiya .x.x.x.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:56 am
Hi Kara. I’m missing you too! The weather varies a bit depending on where you are exactly. We are a long way from the coast where we are. It is very cold. In summer the average temperature is probably about -20 degrees- that’s what we have been getting most days anyway. It drops much lower in the winter. Around the coast it is a little bit warmer than it is inland. It is very windy. We have had windspeeds of up to 55 miles per hour. Near the South Pole it gets even more windy with katabatic (gravity driven) winds. We have constant daylight. In the winter it is constant darkness. It is very dry. Similar to a desert. There is only about 2 inches of snow a year. We had a few centimetres the other day. Hope this helps!
December 5th, 2007 at 10:57 am
Hi Ruth. Really great to hear from you. Hope the science is going ok! I’m not suffering from hypothermia but I do have some nasty chilblains on my fingers. No penguins except in Chile. We are about 600 miles from the coast so we don’t expect to see any. If I do see one I will be sure to call it Ruth. Thanks for the message. Really cheered me up after a hard day!
December 6th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
hey there miss.
Danny.P told me to tell you to hit a penguin.
But seriouly the fire alarms at school are all wanged up and we got sent home today, in the middle of my mock GCSE maths!!!
Maybe no school tomorrow, heres hoping!
Anyway good luck and hope you dont get lost.
Your best ever student.

December 7th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
hi
Is it very cold or just right + Have you put up a christmas tree?
December 9th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
hello, we started our next topic, i forgot wat it was caled! Have you made a snow man?!
December 10th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
Hello best ever student. Lucky you getting sent home in the middle of a mock! Hope the exams went and are going well. Sure that they will be. Expecting great things from you!
December 14th, 2007 at 10:53 am
Pierre, how can you not know what topic you are doing? Although we have had lots of snow in the last couple of days and snowdrifts that are over a metre high we haven’t made one yet as the snow doesn’t stick together because it’s so dry. Perhaps tomorrow …
December 14th, 2007 at 10:54 am
Lew, it’s cold! Sometimes my hair and eyelashes get frozen. My hands are often cold and my face too, especially my nose. We haven’t put up a Christmas tree yet. I don’t know if there is a tree here! We are hoping we won’t be here for Christmas but we haven’t had any good news about when our plane is going to get in. Any ideas about how I can make a Christmas tree?
December 14th, 2007 at 11:05 am
HI Saffiya. Great to hear from you. I hope that things are going well. I think I may have missed your comment the first time. Sorry! There is a lot of research going on in Antarctica at the moment. It’s very difficult to list all of it. If you look on the British Antarctic Survey website you will find a full list. There is lots of work going on to do with the wildlife here- work on penguins, seals, sea spiders, krill, seabirds, tardigrades ….. Also work on the phytoplankton and on lichen. People are researching the ozone layer, climate change, deep ice cores to monitor atmosphere changes, sub-glacial lakes, geology, the effects of tourists on the environment. The list is endless as some of the most important science in the world is happening here. I think in the future Antarctica should be protected as much as possible. I think at the moment it seems to be OK, except perhaps for some of the fishing that is happening. I think there should be tighter rules on how much krill can be taken from here as I heard yesterday that there are new krill fishing fleets. I think tourism should be allowed as I think everyone has a right to visit this amazing place, but it should be carefully controlled to minimise impact on the environment. Hope this helps and isn’t too late!
December 16th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Hi Miss
Hurry back - so far we have had 4 form tutors. (are we really that bad that no-one likes to stay). Only one week to go and then Christmas hols. What will you be doing on Christmas day. Whose’s cooking the turkey or is it penguin?
